36K: Bringing back the 90’s Sound

I received Tweet with a SoundCloud attached to it. Like All music we receive I took a listen to it, and I was surprised. It felt like an old school Hip-Hop track (and by old-school I’m referring to 80 and 90’s music). The 80’s and 90’s was an era in hip-hop when music had a genuine yet unique feeling to it. It took me back to the time when you got excited to hear the beats and the lyrics that went along with those beats. It was during a period when music had substance. I got that feeling back when I listened to one of 36K’s track. Let’s just say he is going to be a game changer….he is going to bring back the 90’s sound.

When did you fall in love with music?

I began to fall in love with music around the age of 4. I couldn't really understand the meaning to most songs, but what really caught my attention about music was the instruments, every element that went into making what I was listening to at the time, I always questioned how they make that sound the way it sounded.

Who is 36K?

Unlike most producers I didn't decide to be called Dj so and so, or blank on the beat for example. Instead I wanted to have a unique name with a lot of meaning behind it. 36K, is symbolizing the 90's ERA of music also known as "The Golden Age" because music was so pure, so raw, and meaningful. Long story short, my name is representing GOLD, 24K isn't good enough.

What attracts you to the 90’s Hip-Hop sound of music?

The main thing that attracts me to this style of music are the elements. When you listen to music from this time you hear originality, creativity, inspiration and many other things. Not saying I don't like the music from today, to me music back then was more pure, and meaningful.

What makes your music unique?

What makes my music unique, is that there's always different elements, and every time you listen you can feel where the music is coming from. You can pretty much close your eyes and visualize something in relation to you, in a way it touches people.

Describe your movement NEW JWR$EY NATIVE?

NEW JWR$EY NATIVE: Is my own personal movement which I came up with a few months back. It's pretty much a description of what you hear when you listen to my music. We all know east/west/southern styles of music, when you listen to my music you're hearing music from a NEW JWR$EY NATIVE. It’s not anything else but a kid from Jersey with ambitions.

What was your inspiration behind “While You Wait”?

When I made "While You Wait" I was honestly responding to a few listeners, (I don't call them fans) who were actually looking forward to me releasing some new material. Before that track I have been very quiet because I'm working on an instrumental tape. So the inspiration behind that was to talk to those listeners let them know I'm still active, and give them a taste of what direction that project is headed.

What can we expect from you in the future?

You can expect a lot of stuff from me. I'm constantly making beats daily, I could honestly tell you I make about 3/4 beats a day. My upcoming project is strictly 90's based music, with inspiration from producers like;!ll Mind, Pete Rock, The Alchemist, Battlecat, and many more.

When it’s all said in done, would you rather be remembered as a businessman or for your music?

I would rather be remembered for my music. The reason why is because music speaks to people, you could be a business man for 10 years active, but what happens when someone else creates a better business? You fall. Music lives forever I still listen to Krs One, Wutang, Eric B & Rakim and many more, mind you when those cats were out I was barely even 4. People respond to music.

Getting to Know Ramen

This week I got the chance to hear new music from an artist that goes by the name of Ramen. He has very catchy lyrics, a host of mixtapes to show for, and swagger like none other. I was interested to know more about Ramen due to the fact that I’d never heard his music before, but let’s just say, I’m now a fan!

What made you fall in love with music?

I fell in love with music through Tupac and Michael Jackson... As a kid I was amazed by the way their music moved generations of people and make them see life through different points of view. I saw how packed the shows got and how crazy people went to just get a glimpse of the history being made, I saw what the music meant to people, how much it was needed in humanity....since then I've been creating my own music for the people and spreading positive vibes.

How long have you been making music?

I've been making music since I was about 9-10 years old. It originally started out as writing poetry when I was 7 and slowly evolved to lyrics as I got older. By 14 I was already in the studio and I knew it was what I wanted to do.

For someone who may have never heard of you before, how would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as "analyzing the views of the world from a kid who grew up too fast".

I noticed that you’ve had quite a few mixtapes, where do you get your inspiration from?

My main push behind the music is my mother and younger brother. But my inspiration can come from anything honestly. I might be walking to work in the city and see something happen that might spark an idea or I might even meet someone on my daily routine and get inspired. I always say I like to analyze the world and kind of let things find me. I find that simplicity usually works a lot better, especially these days.

Describe your movement, what does DSND mean?

D.S.N.D is more than a label or "rap group". It's a way of thinking more so. It's actually got 2 meanings as well. One is "Doom Squad Never Dies" which is clearly for label purposes. The other is "Don't Slack, Never Doubt”. Which can apply to everyone cause I understand not everyone wants to rep "D.S.N.D" if they don't consider themselves part of our label but maybe they relate to the pain, they still have a reason to rep "D.S.N.D" regardless so it's more marketable I guess.

When it’s all said and done what do you want to be remembered as?

When all is said and done I just want to be remembered as someone who cared about the people enough to sacrifice every minute of my day trying to inspire others to become innovators and change the world on their own. If I could pick 2 people to be compared too it would be Tupac and Einstein. I like to challenge theories and spread knowledge... I just want to be remembered for what I was at heart & mind, a true soldier of life.

Any upcoming shows or new music?

No upcoming shows this month but I have a few projects lined up such as my 11th solo mixtape releasing sometime at the start of 2015 entitled "Innovative Visionz". I usually release one every few months but this one I went in to album mode for so I'm taking a different approach and taking my time. However I do have the label's 2nd coming mixtape entitled "D.S.N.D, The Mixtape 2" releasing at the end of September, a few creative collaboration projects, and maybe even a surprise before then... as early as the next week or so, we'll see. Ha!

THE WILD WILD EAST/K Mil INTERVIEW

I always love when artist reach out to me to be included on the site. This is a great networking experience, but it also allows for me to discover new music. If you truly know me, then you know that I love nothing more than artist that are on the rise. This week I received an email from K Mil and The Wild Wild East. I'd never heard the name before, so immediately got excited, I browsed the website and listen to the music, saw some of the things that other artist had compiled and I was immediately impressed and knew that an interview was needed.

What made you fall in love with music?
What made me fall in love with music is how it can relate to people and how real it is. Every artist has a message they try to deliver to the world. I love how when I’m going through a struggle I can put a song that can get me through that bad time. Also, the creative side of music is amazing and how people can view a song in so many different ways. You can think things into existence with music.  I can’t picture my life without it and it's something I want to do forever.
What do you bring to the table for The Wild Wild East?
I bring hard work and my love for the music. I love creating music and music videos, I try to be super creative with the resources I have. I try to motivate, inspire and help everyone as much as I can. Everyday I’m just doing as much as can to gain more knowledge and get better at my talent.
Describe The Wild Wild East?
The Wild Wild East is a collection of artist who have come together to spread their talents throughout the nation. We are not a label or a group.

What does the artist of The Wild Wild East have planned for 2014/2015?
Two new mixtapes from Joey Benjamins and Kay Saints, El Angel's debut mixtape, new art from the Vera Twins, new music from K Mil and new videos by K Mil / Dom East, and a few new members.

What makes The Wild Wild East unique?
We aren't just musicians we are a collective of artist, directors, photographers, graphic designers, fashion designers, actors and musicians. The people in the group each have different skills and all bring that together.
All the artist formed under The Wild Wild East Umbrella from Union City, NJ?
So far yes, but the new additions are not.
Are there any upcoming projects that you’re working on or any other artist working on?
We are mostly working on mixtapes, singles and videos, and are working on showcases for the Vera Twins art, and a new clothing line.

Any upcoming shows or events from The Wild Wild East artist?
So far nothing is scheduled for the time being.

The Wild Wild East brings something new to the table. I think many artist can benefit from this type of collective setup. Be sure to support these artist and check out some of the things that they are doing.

There has been recent chatter among team owners about letting players participate in FIBA games due to the chance of a season ending injuries, i.e. Paul George. Do you think players should compete in FIBA games during the off season?

Paul George might not be able to walk or drive for a while, but when he does start driving again he will be doing so in style. The Indiana Pacers point guard just recently purchased a Ferrari 458….must be nice!

LeBron James may look noticeably thinner in recent photos that he has posted on Instagram, it’s been reported that the NBA star has lost a little over 10 pounds since the end of the season. Sources say that the 29 year old has taken on this diet (not eating carbohydrates) in an effort to have longevity in his career much like what Kobe Bryant did when he entered into his 30’s.

Congratulations to Becky Hammond who retires after this season from the WNBA. She will now become the first woman to be paid by the NBA as well as first woman as a FULL time assistant coach in the NBA, for the San Antonio Spurs. Hammond who has played 16 seasons in the WNBA and currently plays for the San Antonio Stars, where she has spent the last eight seasons.

Also, Congratulations to former NFL player and TV-show host Michael Strahan for being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame this past weekend. Strahan spent his entire 15 year career playing for the New York Giants.

This Week in Entertainment

Jhene Aiko recently released the cover art for her much anticipated album ‘Souled Out’ which is scheduled to be released later this year.

Anyone a fan of Bobby Shmurda, well his hit ‘Hot Boy’ now has a remix with the Coke Boy himself, French Montana. Are we feeling the remix?

If you haven’t already heard Beyonce dropped the remix to her hit song ‘Flawless’ which features rap Goddess, Nicki Minaj.  In Nicki Minaj news, she finally released her single ‘Anaconda’ which had the very controversial single cover. The song uses the beat to Sir Mix A-lot’s ‘Baby Got Back’

Any Luke James fans? The R&B crooner recently covered British singers Sam Smith’s ‘Stay with Me’. Take a listen…Thoughts; did he kill it or what?

Congratulations to Ms. KeKe Palmer for becoming the first African-American to portray Cinderella on Broadway. Sherri Shepard has also been tapped to play the evil step-mother to Cinderella.

2014 War on Gaza : As the world watches

Anyone that follows my personal page will know of the interest that I have in the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict and how much I post updates about the issues. I have been interested in this topic for a while and this was originally my undergraduate thesis but I switched it to Darfur Genocide. If I had picked the Conflict as a topic, I would have had a book, real talk. Yet, I digress.  This had not been the first time that these two entities have been involved in bloodshed and violent conflict but this is the first time of many that the Israeli Government has been so harshly scrutinized for the actions that they have taken in the war. The United Nations have already condemned the actions of the IDF(Israel Defense Forces) as they have shelled 6 U.N. schools that were designated as refugee safe places caused numerous deaths and hundreds of injuries.

In a nutshell of a background, Israel was given the land that it sits on today in 1948 by the Western Powers (U.S.A, Britain, etc.). Under Hitler they experienced mass genocide. This area once known as Palestine was invaded the next day by a collective of Arab forces (Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq) in an attempt to help the Palestinians keep their land. The Palestinians were moved from this land to areas known as The West Bank (initially controlled by Jordan) and Gaza Strip (initially controlled by Egypt). These lands were seized by Israel after fierce fighting with those same Arab Forces in the 6-Day War of 1967.

These lands have been largely oppressed for over 50 years and constantly been engaged in terrorism, guerrilla warfare and protest ever since the beginning of Israel. These areas are largely impoverished, largely restricted and continuously occupied with an unclear structure of government especially in the Gaza Strip. The Gaza Strip is a small land but happens to be one of the most densely populated areas on earth. This area also suffers from over 50% unemployment while Israel enjoys a booming economy and a seemingly western style of life.
That's the background in a nutshell, but this fight goes far back into the Bible days and the "Sons of Abraham". This piece of land that the Israelis (or the Jewish for those who may not know that they are the same) were once their land and the capital of Israel is Jerusalem although some may contest their rights to the land. This land is land that the Israelis feel that has been promised to them in the Torah and Bible as they are "God's Chosen People". They have always thought of that land as home and have made many attempts to repopulate the land with their race.

Back to today. The war today has been closing in on around 30 days of fighting. In this fighting, more 1,300 Palestinians and mostly civilians have been the casualties in this attack on the Gaza Strip. Less that 60 Israelis have lost their lives. Although there have been serious altercations between Hamas/Palestinians in recent time (2006 and 2012) these fights today have surprisingly mild beginnings. As I watched the news, I will tell the story as I understood the escalation on a seemingly small issue when it comes to large scale war standards. Three Israeli boys were missing and Hamas was accused of taking them. Hamas is the name for an organization based out of Gaza. Their name essentially means "Islamic Resistance Movement". They have governed Gaza since 2007. This organization does have terrorist designation by many countries including the U.S., Egypt, Jordan, the U.K. and others. Not all countries see this as a terrorist organization. This is who Israel is fighting right now. Now back to the recap, the boys were found dead in the West Bank. Israel then carried out airstrikes and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quoted to say, "Hamas will pay". Soon after, Jewish Israeli extremist and citizens in the Country of Israel became hostile. A Palestinian-Israeli teen was kidnapped, beaten to death and set on fire. During the protest of his murder, his American cousin that was on vacation from Florida was attacked. This attack was caught on tape as this young teenager was zip tied, beaten unconscious and taken to jail without medical attention. This sparked a barrage of missile fire from both sides and eventually the ground invasion of the Gaza Strip by the IDF.

This invasion has caused media attention and international uproar as most ceasefires have been violated and no side wants to give an inch. Hamas has no want for a ceasefire unless the Palestinians are allowed free movement and a basic liberation of the people. Israel wants a demilitarized Hamas. These agreements could be reached, but there seems to be a need for Israel to be separated from the Palestinian people. This sounds like segregation and oppression to me. It seems as if there is a vastly uneven fight going on where the aggressor cries wolf as they destroy everything in their path. Israel has the most advance missile protection system on earth which will block around 90% of Hamas missile into Israel while Israelis ground and aerial attacks pummel Palestinian infrastructure. They recently shelled the only power plant in Gaza. This has forced the residents of Gaza to live in darkness, without electricity and proper water and sewer operations until the plant can be rebuilt. They said that it will take a year to fix but cannot be started until the war is over due to intense fighting.

This conflict seems to not have a clear ending as Israel tries to destroy Hamas' military but leave political aspects remaining to attempt to not cause a power vacuum. This seems highly unlikely and there seems to be no desire from Israel to liberate the Palestinians. You may expect the United States to help to bring peace to this area. That is highly unlikely as Israel is our biggest ally in the area and we have a hand in their existence. Not only has the United States had blind support of Israel, it is also a bad look in the political realm to not support Israel. They receive the most American aid compared to any other country and are to receive $3.115 BILLION from us in 2014. We are also resupplying them with ammunition currently for this particular war. It is not hidden that we have a supreme bias. Hopefully, the gruesome pictures are enough to gain the world support for Palestinian Freedom.

Who is A-Mess?!

I recently had the chance to have a one on one conversation with a Union City, New Jersey rapper by the name of A-Mess where I asked him what he been up to musically and what’s to come. As an avid lover of music I often spend my time listening to unsigned artist. A-Mess just so happened to be one of those unsigned artist that I came across on Twitter a few years ago, I began to follow his movement and was nonetheless impressed by his musical style and delivery. He has an extremely large fan-base that continues to grow and has even put together his own in house team called, Lamborghini Dreamz (LD). Not only that he has been crowned one of the best and biggest artist to ever come out of Union City, New Jersey. He has released successful records such as “Shake It”, “Too Fast”, and recent single “Going Down” to name a few. He has achieved worldwide success. Fast forward a couple years and an interview later, and you can get a sneak peek into understanding, “Who Is A-Mess”.

What made you fall in love with music?
Well, I always believed I was born to do music at the age of 12 I remember writing lyrics and expressing myself through music. I connected with the beats right away. It was more of something I loved to do than a hobby. I would say life struggles made me fall in love with music. It became my way out.

Who are your musical influences?
At the age of 12 I looked up to 50 Cent so much. Watching him blow up during the “Get Rich or Die Trying” era inspired me to want to be on stage just like him. I'm 23 now; I'm highly inspired right now by YMCMB and I have since built my own team called Lamborghini Dreamz. My focus is to become the next YMCMB in the near future. Birdman is such an inspiration to me, went from nothing to something.

Being that you are from New Jersey, what are you doing to spread your music to the south or even west coast?
I'm looking to work with more southern artists and make great music. One thing about me I listen to a lot of music from the south. So I'm into their craft and hope to move down south one day. As far as the west coast, I would love to tour for a few months out there and get a feel of the other side!

What can 2014 expect from A-Mess?
You can definitely expect a lot of great music. I believe I'm working the hardest I ever have in my career. My team and I are working on new features with artists across the country so stayed tuned for some new greatness!

What sets you apart from other artist?
I believe the fact that I make music for me, not for the money or the fame. I always make sure to put my life on beats and express myself. Also the fact everything I do is in house. So the music will always sound like a new sound.

Any upcoming shows that you would like the readers to know about?
As far as right now shows are in the talk of conversation, but I'm really focused on creating new music.

This Week in Entertainment…

Congratulations to Alicia Keys and her husband Swizz Beatz, the couple just announced that they are expecting their second child together. Swizz Beatz already has three other beautiful children from previous relationships. Congratulations, I wonder what they are having this time…hmm!

In Hip-Hop news Remy Ma has finally been released from jail, well at least she was suppose to be. Reports are now stating that the Bronx born rapper won’t be released today due to a disciplinary issue. It is believed that her disciplinary issue is as a result of "third party" calling on July 21st, which ironically was the same day she did the Angie Martinez phone interview. I’m sure this will be resolved within in the next week or so and she will be soon released. Remy was sentenced to eight years, but ended up getting a shorter sentence of six years for assaulting a woman. We will save our formal “welcome back” when a new release date is set. Do you think Remy Ma will reclaim her spot as one of the top female rappers?

Get On Up, the James Brown biopic is set to hit theaters this Friday. This movie has already received good reviews and has been called Oscar worthy. Make sure to go and support the film! Chadwick Boseman, who also played Jackie Robinson in 42, plays James Brown.

For those who watch, the season finale of Power will air on Saturday night at 9/8c. This should turn out to be an intense episode based on how things ended on last week’s episode. Let’s say a prayer for Ghost, because he’s going to need it! (Side note: who would’ve thought that 50 Cent’s character was the mastermind behind “pink shoes”)

Poor Big Sean!

In recent news actress and singer Naya Rivera recently announced that she married fellow actor Ryan Dorsey in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico over the weekend. I hadn’t heard of the news (mainly because I could care less) until I logged on Twitter and everyone was sending their condolences to Big Sean. Of course I had to dig deeper to find out what was going. Big Sean and Naya Rivera had only called off their engagement 3 months prior and on top of all of that she got married on the same day that she and Big Sean had planned to marry on. Oh, and Naya still has her engagement ring that Big Sean gave her (that’s none of our business). The bigger question is was all of this too soon? Was Naya having relations with her new hubby on the side, while still with Big Sean?  Was she trying to get back at Big Sean? Who knows!

What are your thoughts? Is dating someone for 2 months and engaged for 1 month too soon to get married?

Whoopi Speaks....

Stephen A. Smith recently made comments on his show First Take about the Ray Rice situation, in which he states that a man should never hit a woman under any circumstances, he also stated that he tells the women in his family that they should never “provoke” a man.. *pause* His exact words were anything to provoke wrong actions”. Women and survivors of domestic violence took offense to this statement (as they should have). I think the usage of the word “provoke” is what made use all say, “Really Stephen A.?! Really." These comments ultimately led to Smith being off the air for a week.

Other celebs have voiced their opinion on his comments as well, the other day Whoopi Goldberg took the statement a little further by saying. “If you make the choice as a woman whose 4 foot 3 and you decide to hit a guy who’s 6 feet tall and you’re the last thing he wants to deal with that day and he hits you back, you cannot be surprised!" Even though her co-host, audience members, and viewers disagreed with her position, Goldberg stuck with it and went on to say, “I know I’m going to catch a lot of hell, and I don’t care. But you have to teach women, do not live with this idea that men have this chivalry thing still with them; don’t assume that that is still in place.” So I guess we can all agree that Whoopi is a firm believer in “keeping your hands to yourself.” I honestly can’t say that I disagree with the last quote, I do think that it’s important for women (and men) to keep their hands to themselves in the midst of a heated argument. No one deserves to be hit, choked, straggled, etc. But I do think there is a double standard when it comes to women and men in domestic disputes. In a previous article that I wrote detailing my thoughts on the “Cartergate Scandal” in which I reminded readers that there is a double standard and that women aren't punished as severely (if at all) in these situations. In general if people learned to respect on another more there will be less of this going on.

What are your thoughts on the comments made by Whoopi Goldberg?
